Cesarean section is alternate route of delivery where the baby is extracted by surgical incision over abdomen and uterus. It may be elective or emergency. Elective is done in a planned manner for certain indications- placenta previa, contracted pelvis, IUGR, malpresentations etc. Emergency is done in response to some complication during the process of labour e.g. fetal distress , non progress of labor, certain malpositions , or mother is not in a condition to bear the labour pains. It is done in the best interest of mother as well as baby.

Cesarean section is a safe surgery. It has no long term side effects. It has no detrimental effect on physical and sexual health. It takes about an hour or so to operate and female recovers in about 6 weeks time.
